2. Trump admin. proposes regulations for first nationwide school choice program
In a statement Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury unveiled proposed regulations for the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC), also known as the Education Freedom Tax Credit.
The tax credit, established by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, is slated to launch on Jan. 1, 2027. It will allow eligible taxpayers to claim a credit of up to $1,700 for donations to scholarship-granting organizations. Those organizations fund scholarships for educational expenses, including private school tuition and academic tutoring.
“The Education Freedom Tax Credit marks a new chapter in educational freedom and opportunity by establishing America’s first nationwide school choice program and empowering states to give students and families more options,” said U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “Thirty states have already opted in, and we encourage all 50 states to participate so every American student and family can benefit.”
The 30 states that have opted into the program. Participating states must submit a list of scholarship-granting organizations to the Internal Revenue Service before individuals can claim a credit under the FSTC program.
