UFC 197 News: Title Challenger Jon Jones Involved In Another Run-in With The Law, Only Gets Three-Days Of Community Service
Former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is once again involved in a traffic violation.
In April 2015, "Bones" was involved in a hit-and-run accident in his new hometown of Albuquerque, where his vehicle hit a pregnant woman's car, resulting to the latter suffering a broken arm. The said misdemeanor led the UFC to strip him of his light heavyweight title belt and suspending him indefinitely.
After serving his sentence and issuing a public apology, the UFC reinstated Jones back in the UFC in October. Prior to the said violation, Jones was also involved in two prior traffic misdemeanors: driving without a license in 2011, and a DUI charge in 2012, where he also crashed his car into a pole in New York.
Last week, it was announced that the UFC was pitting Jones in a rematch against current champion Daniel Cormier, as the main event feature for UFC 197 on April 23rd.
But just recently, the 28-year-old mixed martial arts fighter was once again tangled in another run-in with the law. In a report by Albuquerque's local news outlet KRQE, online documents from January 31st have revealed that Jones was driving without a license, registration and insurance.
Apparently, this most recent case will not be affecting the already scheduled rematch with Cormier, unlike his previous one.
In another report by Marc Raimondi for MMA Fighting, the New Mexico Corrections Department decided to slap Jones with a mere three days of community service. He is set to appear in traffic court on Wednesday to face the said charges.
The report adds that according to public affairs coordinator Ashley Espinoza, the said punishment was given mainly because such traffic infractions are "minor in nature." Jones himself has not yet made a comment on the matter, but his manager Malki Kawa did release a statement through an appearance on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour.
"It's not a big deal. I'm not really understanding all the hype behind it. But hey, it's Jon Jones," Kawa said.
