Underwater UFO the Millennium Falcon?

A mysterious object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea has alien hunters and deep sea explores alike speculating on what is lying on the sea floor.

Peter Lindberg, who leads a team of explorers from the deep-sea salvage company Ocean Explorer, discovered the object while they were looking for shipwrecked vessels over a secret location on the Baltic Sea.

"I have been doing this for nearly 20 years so I have a seen a few objects on the bottom, but nothing like this," Lindberg told CNN.

He went on to explain that it was a chance encounter that his team came across the unknown mass.

"We had been out for nine days and we were quite tired and we were on our way home, but we made a final run with a sonar fish and suddenly this thing turned up," Lindberg said.

Because the object was resting on the bottom of the sea floor Lindberg used a side-scanning sonar to develop an image of the object which is over 200 feet in diameter, according to the New York Daily News.

The explorers came across the object last August but due to the significant financial cost to conduct expeditions the team of explores has had to rely on outside opinions and speculations of what it could be.

"We've heard lots of different kinds of explanations, from George Lucas's spaceship, the Millennium Falcon, to 'it's some kind of plug to the inner world,' like it should be hell down there or something," Lindberg said.

More conservative guesses have the mass being a collection of sunken ships.

"Right now, we know about 20,000 objects, mostly shipwrecks, in the Baltic Sea. But I think there may be more than 100,000," according to sonar expert Ardreas Olsson as reported by Yahoo! News.

For now speculation will have to satisfy eager minds until the team can coordinate another expedition which, according to Lindberg, might occur sometime around May of this year.
