'Venom' Release Date, News: Spider-Man Spin-Off Movie to Premiere in 2018

Reports recently shared that Sony Pictures has decided to create a "Venom" film as a spin-off to the "Spider-Man" movie franchise and it is slated for release in 2018.

The box office organization Exhibitor Relations revealed this week through their Twitter page  information on Sony's plans, saying: "Watch out, Spider-man. VENOM is now part of the release calendar web as Sony has slated the Spidey spinoff for October 5, 2018."

As noted by Screen Rant, the mentioned Oct. 5 date might ring a bell to comic fans since it was the initially announced premiere date for "Aquaman," which features "Game of Thrones" star Jason Momoa. His movie has since been moved to a later release set for December next year.

Shortly after Exhibitor Relations revealed the "Venom" premiere slot, they also announced that the writer of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," Alex Kurtzman, will direct the 2018 film. However, an update from the organization quickly clarified that Kurtzman is in no way related to the upcoming film. On the other hand, Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, who were both part of the "Jumanji" reboot, will reportedly work on the "Venom" script.

The same Screen Rant report noted that putting the "Venom" movie in a 2018 schedule will seal the annual release of a title under the "Spider-Man" movie franchise since 2016 until 2019. However, as of now, it is not yet sure whether Sony will collaborate with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in helming the upcoming film. It is also yet to be announced whether "Spider-Man" actor Tom Holland will appear in the "Venom" movie.

Fans will recall that the character of Venom first appeared in the comic strips in the 1980s under the "The Amazing Spider-Man" print franchise. Venom was introduced as a Symbiote, a liquid-like creature that needed a living host.

Venom first went to Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, and made him its host. However, upon knowing the real nature of Venom, the wall-crawling hero managed to break free from the Symbiote. Venom then found a more convenient host in Eddie Brock who became one of Spider-Man's rivals.

In the movie franchise, Venom was introduced in "Spider-Man 3" in 2007 where Eddie Brock/Venom was portrayed by Topher Grace.
