West Virginia Flooding [MAP]: Latest Updates on Affected Areas, Casualties and Donations

Thousands Remain Homeless, Cold and Hungry in the Aftermath of the Historic Flooding

The West Virginia flooding has killed of 24 people and left thousands of people homeless. The donation and collection drive for food, clothing and other items for the victims are still well underway, but there are still areas that remain devastated.

West Virginia Flooding Areas

Deadly floods poured out in torrents in West Virginia last week. At least 23 people have been killed and more than 1,200 homes have been ravaged in the state. Hundreds of homes and numerous businesses have been destroyed in Kanawaha and Roane County. Greenbrier County also suffered the same fate.

Most of the casualties occurred in the luxury resort of White Sulphur Springs. There were 15 people who were reportedly washed away by the floodwaters. Additionally, the West Virginia flooding casualties also included at least two children who were swept away by the flash floods in Jackson County and Elm Grove area.

West Virginia Flooding Considered Deadliest in the State

The flooding in West Virginia was powerful enough to sweep away homes and destroy little neighborhoods. This is because of the state's topography composed of steep mountains and narrow valleys that powered the flood waters in a rush. Furthermore, the rain also flowed heavily.

More Rain Coming During July 4 Weekend?

According to the National Weather Service, more rain will be pouring in already affected areas in West Virginia. Rain will be coming to Nicholas County, Kanawha and Greenbrier County. Authorities are on constant alert for rain and flash flood warnings.

Flood of Donations Come to West Virginia

President Barack Obama has declared the West Virginia Flood a state of calamity and has sent Federal aid in hard-hit counties including Greenbrier, Nicholas and Kanawha. There is an ongoing collection and donation drive by various national and international organizations. Several Hollywood stars and celebrities have also pitched in their help by raising money to be donated to the flood victims.

How to Help

Financial contributions can be donated to various organizations and funds including the West Virginia United Way, Red Cross, Save the Children and other local groups. Make sure to verify the groups before donating. Priority items such as baby stuff, toiletries, cleaning supplies and other hygiene products can be sent to West Virginia University, churches and the state's sherrif's departments. Volunteering posts are also available for those who would like to donate their time and energy.
