The World's Ugliest Dog will be crowned on Friday at an annual event in Petaluma, California. (Photo: Facebook/WorldsUgliestDog Screen Shot)The World's ugliest dog competition takes place soon with 30 of the so-called ugliest dogs in the world set to compete.

Animal lovers who support the event will be able to get themselves prepared for the event by visiting the competition's Facebook page, which shows a selection of dogs vying for the ugliest dog title.

The entire competition may seem like a strange, informal affair, however, the reality couldn't be further from the truth. Some owners are known to invest huge amounts of time and money into their pets in the hope of taking the crown.

Many spend thousands flying in from around the world, and also invest large sums of money on grooming costs, and accommodation costs. Winning a large monetary prize is also not really a consideration as the top prize for the winner is only $1,500.

Most are much more focused on the recognition that comes with being officially crowned the World's Ugliest Dog. The winner will be prominently displayed on the Weekend Today Show in New York on Sunday.

Event organizer Vicki DeArmon told NBC's "These are some of the best dog owners in the world. Some of them take it very seriously. I think a few hearts have been broken when they haven't been the winner."

Organizers have said about 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, with 30 of the most ugliest dogs in the world set to compete for the title.
