'X-Files' Revival Cast News, Update: Joel McHale Is the First Guest Star

Joining Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in their hunt for the truth in the revival of the hit science fiction horror TV drama series "X-Files" is the popular television host and actor Joel McHale.

The "Community" star is the first actor getting signed to appear as guest star in the reported six-episode instalment of the cult classic favourite program, according to Deadline.

The 43-year-old actor, who also appeared in movies like "Spider-Man 2," "Spy Kids," and "Ted," among others, will take on the character named Tad O'Malley "a conservative Internet news anchor who becomes an unlikely support for Mulder."

According to the publication, series creator Chris Carter is a fan of McHale's work, which eventually led to his involvement to the show.

Deadline meanwhile added, that several other original members of the cast including Mitch Pileggi (who plays the role of Walter Skinner) and William B. Davis (as the Cigarette Smoking Man) will be returning to reprise their roles.

The revived series is reported to already have entered its early production stage and is now set to premiere early next year on Jan. 24 behind Fox's coverage of the NFC championship game.

As for what to expect in the upcoming show, Duchovny previously told Entertainment Weekly that the six episodes will be mixed with stand-alone mystery cases and the mythology of the series.

"Even though there's only six, there will be a mix," the actor said. "It's not really The X-Files without the mythology."
