'Xenogears' Remake News, Rumors: Is There Any Way for the Game to Return?

For many dedicated players, the PlayStation 1 era can be considered the Golden Age of gaming. Despite being far from the astounding graphics and animation of modern titles, most of them pale in comparison to the level of storytelling and character growth of the classics, and Squaresoft's (now Square Enix) "Xenogears" is one such game.

"Xenogears" is an Active Time Battle (ATB)-based role-playing game (RPG) that follows the story of protagonist Fei Fong Wong, a lad who has no recollection of his past. He is forced to leave after a group of giant robots called Gears lands in their small town, where seeing blood awoke an unknown force within him, making him enter one of the gears and do battle. During his quest, he meets Elly, a Solarian who has the same troubles as him.

Their story is not the typical boy-meets-girl but rather touches on a myriad of themes such as religion, politics, psychology and science. The deep plot and moving narrative are what have captured the hearts of many players, thus the clamor for a remake is strong.

It can be recalled, however, that Game Revolution speculated in the past that the title may not return anymore. Due to a lot of factors, but primarily the lack of incentive to create a sequel, the game may be left to memory. There are more current clues though that spurs optimism in the community, hoping the game could rise again.

Siliconera has reported that Square Enix's "World of Final Fantasy" is going to get a "Xenogears" mirage. Such move may be a subtle way to tell the gaming world that somewhere in the background, heads are working to remake the title.

In an even more direct way, a currently Japan-only title named "Figureheads," another Square Enix game, has released a collaboration video with "Xenogears." It is difficult not to see the connection, especially with the soundtrack "Flight" playing, letting out a twinge of nostalgia.

Are these teasers to a possible "Xenogears" remake? The fans can only hope that their plea is being heard.
