2018 Shelby 1000 Release Date, Specs, Price News: Mustang GT Track Car Unveiled With 1000 Horsepower

The 2018 Shelby 1000 was recently unveiled at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. The next-generation track car will be powered by a new engine that delivers 1,000 horsepower.

To deliver massive horsepower, the latest Shelby track car comes with a 5.2-liter V8 engine, a 4.5-liter Whipple supercharger, a 90-degree crank and modified GT350 cylinder heads.

In order to support this kind of performance, the powertrain also features a high-flow fuel system, an upgraded transmission and a new intercooler, among others.

"From the first Cobra in 1962 to this latest Shelby super car, Shelby American continues to push the performance envelope," said Gary Patterson, Shelby American president. "The new Shelby 1000 demonstrates our commitment to leading American performance from the highways to the track and trails. Second place is first loser, and we intend to stay out front," he added.

Although the 2018 Shelby 1000 actually delivers 200 horsepower less than its predecessor, the automaker stressed that performance isn't all about just horsepower. The new track car actually has all its major components replaced to ensure that it delivers the best performance on the track.

The 2018 Shelby 1000 track car comes with a new front fascia, hood, front fenders and rockers, as well as a new coil-over suspension, custom bodywork, Brembo brakes, and harder and wider wheels. The vehicle also uses a new chassis and independent front and back suspension.

With all these features combined, the 2018 Shelby 1000 delivers a different kind of powerful performance than its predecessor. Unlike the 2012–2014 Shelby 1000, however, it is designed as a track-only vehicle and will not have a street configuration available to consumers.

The 2018 Shelby 1000 package will be available for the 2015 and later Ford Mustang GT models with a starting price of $169,995, exclusive of the actual Ford Mustang GT. It will go into limited production in the first quarter of 2018, and only 50 models will be built each year.
