'Avengers: Infinity War' News, Spoilers: Writers, Director Clarify Comment About 67 Characters, Tease Upcoming War with Thanos

Superhero ensemble "Captain America: Civil War" may appear to be superpacked with MCU characters but, if its filmmakers' previous comment is to be believed, "Avengers: Infinity War" will feature a cast list that will dwarf that of "Civil War."

Earlier this year, Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind the upcoming "Civil War" and the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War," fuelled fan speculation when they said that "Infinity War" will have 67 Marvel characters. While the Russo brothers have already clarified that statement, telling Collider in January that they were "being figurative" when they said that number, "Infinity War" writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have also now spoken up about the issue.

During a recent chat with The Huffington Post, the writers explained that while there could indeed be 67 characters in the film, as that is the number of characters that are available in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn't necessarily mean that there will be 67 characters nor that they will all have major roles.

"That number comes from the fact that that's everyone who's already been introduced," Markus explained.

"There's not going to be 67 lead parts," McFeely added.

While this bit of news may disappoint some fans, the writers teased something for viewers to get excited about.

According to McFeely, he is looking forward to giving Thanos some good scenes and seeing the iconic Marvel character become the main villain in an MCU film.

"He's never been the main character in that way, so giving lots of good screen time to Thanos is paramount and pretty fun," he said.

"He is the worst and greatest threat that the universe has ever seen and the Avengers have ever seen," Joe Russo said in an interview with Yahoo! TV. According to the "Civil War" director, one of the most "compelling" parts of the upcoming superhero clash film is having the Avengers in a "very complicated" place at the end of the film, knowing that they are about to face Thanos.

"Will they be ready?" Russo asked. "Can they pull together? How will they pull together? Is it reparable? And I think that it energizes and supercharges that looming threat."

"Avengers: Infinity War Part 1" is slated to hit theaters May 4, 2018.

"Captain America: Civil War" drops May 6.
