'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 to End the Show

HBO's popular prohibition era drama "Boardwalk Empire" will be ending after its fifth season. The show is very well liked and ending it so quickly came as a shock to many fans. Why would HBO want to get rid of a popular show? Read on to see what series creator Terence Winter has to say on the decision to end "Boardwalk Empire" after just five seasons.

A year ago, the idea of ending of "Boardwalk Empire" seemed far away. In an interview with Indiewire, Terrance Winter explained that he did not know where the show's future lied.

"'Where are we going? Do we see an end in sight here?' That's the debate we're having now every day with each other. It's let's tell the best story possible and when we're done we'll move on and tell another story," the series creator said.

However, it seems the show's producers and HBO executives have come to a conclusion on that debate. Thursday, Terence Winter released a statement saying that the hit show will be ending after next season.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire.' After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion," the series creator's statement read.

The network has always been a fan of the show. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo lavished praise on "Boardwalk Empire."

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages," he said.
