'Doctor Who' News, Update: Sylvester McCoy Says No to A Female Time Doctor

The talks of a female incarnate on BBC's hit science-fiction drama TV series "Doctor Who" have been going on for years. The most recent touch on the subject was during the show's panel at the San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month.

The panel, who saw the presence of Peter Capaldi (as the 12th Doctor), Jenna Coleman (as Clara Oswald), Michelle Gomez (as the Mistress) and executive producer Steven Moffat, was asked on the possibility of a female Time Lord.

Coleman told Entertainment Weekly, "I'm sure it will happen at some point. I think it's just about casting the right actor."

The executive producer gave an subtle answer.

"My opinion is fairly obvious from the show. I think I've expressed myself about this as clearly as you could … some people are not reading the subtext, because it's too subtle," Moffat said.

As for Capaldi, he argued that the gender of the Doctor should be out of the question, given his non-human nature.

"We sort of live in a world where everything's so easy and accessible. The Doctor's mysterious, he's a Time Lord. He's not a guy," he said.

However, a new development on the matter quoted one of the show's previous portrayers of the role, Sylvester McCoy.

The actor, who recently spoke with The Mirror, said blatantly that having a female Doctor could alter the beloved show entirely.

"I'm sorry, but no – Doctor Who is a male character, just like James Bond. If they changed it to be politically correct then it would ruin the dynamics between the doctor and the assistant, which is a popular part of the show," he told the publication.

"I support feminism, but I'm not convinced by the cultural need of a female Doctor Who," he added.

Regardless of which, "Doctor Who" Season 9 premieres Sept. 19 on the BBC and BBC America.
