Earthquakes Today 2013: Italy Earthquake Strikes, 5.1 Tremor Felt Across Northern Italy

After a series of earthquakes in Peru this week, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Italy today.

Two days after a 4.6 earthquake struck Lima, Peru with various aftershocks, a mid-sized 5.1 quake has hit northern Italy on Friday.

The earthquake hit Italy at about 12.30 p.m. local time, and was centered about one mile from the city of Fivizzano, a small town close to the coastal city of La Spezia.

The tremor struck at a depth of about 6.4 miles (1.3 km) and was felt throughout northern Italy, according to various reports.

Buildings were said to have shaken as far away as Venice, and in the cities of Florence and Livorno some residents reportedly felt strong shaking during the time of the tremor.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake no serious injuries were reported, but some moderate damage has been reported to houses near where the earthquake hit.

Italy was also hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in February this year. In that incident the quake hit in the Province of Frosinone at about 10.16 p.m. local time.

The country is used to mid-range earthquakes, and in 2012 alone there were 13 earthquakes throughout the European country that were of a greater strength than 4.0 in magnitude.
