Eddie Murphy Rumored to Be Appearing on 'Saturday Night Live'

"Saturday Night Live" alumni Eddie Murphy is rumored to be making an appearance on this weekend's program, which will be hosted by actor Ben Stiller, according to the New York Post.

Since leaving "SNL" in 1984, the comedic actor has not returned to the comedy stage that made him famous.

Murphy, like other notable "SNL" grads, had left for the comedy sketch show for the bright lights of Hollywood, where he stared in major box office attractions. In the many years since his departure, Murphy has resisted returning to guest host the show, make a cameo, or even attending the various anniversary broadcasts.

Insiders have attributed this lack of interest by the comedian to a feud between Murphy and the show's longtime producer, Lorne Michaels, over a comment by former "SNL" regular David Spade.

Spade had reportedly made a derisive comment about one of Murphy's less-than spectacular films, "Vampire in Brooklyn."

One of the most popular actors to ever grace the "SNL" stage, Murphy is credited with bringing new life to the slumping weekend program during the early 1980s.

During his stint on the show, Murphy created a slew of memorable caricatures, such as the speech-challenged Buckwheat from the "Little Rascals," Mr. Robinson, a variation of Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood" and Gumby of the popular "Gumby" cartoon of the1950s and 60s.

In 1982, Murphy filled in for an incapacitated Nick Nolte who was the scheduled host and became the only regular of the iconic program to have hosted the show while being a cast member.

Having made his big screen debut in 1982, with the well received "48 Hrs," Murphy has enjoyed great box office successes over his career with hits such as "The Nutty Professor," "Dr. Dolittle," "Daddy Day Care," and "Shrek."
