'Elementary' Season 4 Spoilers – Interesting Dynamics Between Sherlock, His Father & Joan

"Elementary" Season 4 seems to be moving away from the investigative procedural format and diving into a character-driven format and the harbinger of this change is the entry of Morland Holmes, father of Sherlock Holmes, in this season.

"Elementary" has always had a unique dynamic between Sherlock and Joan Watson. For starters, Dr. Watson is a female and she is Dr. Joan Watson. Sherlock keeps a lot of secrets from her but she too has a past. Both move forward irrespective of this. But the same characteristics create tension between the two and to this mix, comes Morland Holmes.

This season will explore the dynamics between the three - Sherlock and his father, Joan Watson and Sherlock's father, and the changing dynamics between Sherlock and Joan.

First, Sherlock and his father both have control issues where both want to remain in control of any situation. Morland Holmes comes to know the downfall of Sherlock in New York and comes to rescue him. This is resented by Sherlock who, on one hand, feels his father never visits the Brownstone, and resents his help on the other.

It will be interesting to watch their dynamics play out this season.

The next dynamics is between Joan Watson and Morland Holmes. Joan had been in Morland's employment at one time and she knows what he is capable of. She does not trust him and thinks he has an ulterior motive when he tries to get her and Sherlock back on board of NYPD.

Sherlock and Joan have this "I-will-keep-my-secret-you-keep-yours" relationship and they are comfortable with it. The entry of Sherlock's father changes this and Joan rushes to protect an already fragile Sherlock who is trying to go sober and solve cases.

The executive producer of "Elementary," Rob Doherty, spoke on the complicated father-son relationship and told Entertainment Weekly "Once he arrives, Sherlock does not appreciate the attention or the distraction that his dad represents. For him, it's too little too late. This is a father and a son with a very complicated history. I'd say for at least a couple decades, Sherlock's father has been out of sight, out of mind. This is going to be a big adjustment for Sherlock to have dad nearby."
