'Hearthstone' Whispers of the Old Gods release date is next week

Hearthstone's latest expansion, Whispers of the Old Gods, launches next week bringing with it 134 brand new cards that offer a twist to the digital card game. The game's third expansion will be available for purchase through the in-game shop on April 26 in the Americas and April 27 in Europe and Asia.

Blizzard Entertainment is also currently accepting pre-purchase for the expansion. Every pre-purchase provides players with a bundle of 50 packs and a new card back, which will all be open when the Whispers of the Old Gods officially release. The deal sets back players $50 and will end once the expansion launches.

In Whispers of the Old Gods, some cards are corrupted versions popular cards. For instance, the Corrupted Healbot will restore 8 health to an enemy hero once killed. The card from which it is based, the Antique Healbot, restores 8 health to a player's own hero. However, there are other cards like Ragnaros the Firelord which have taken the opposite direction. The Paladin legendary becomes a holy warrior, Ragnaros the Lightlord.

The expansion will also feature four powerful cards. These are the Old Gods themselves: C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y'Shaarj, and N'Zoth. These gods become stronger if their followers or minions are in the same deck.

Whispers of the Old Gods follows The League of Explorers, an expansion which came out in November. The launch of Whispers of the Old Gods follows the typical release window for "Hearthstone" expansions, which is four to five months.

"Hearthstone's" Whispers of the Old Gods is available for iOS, Android, and Windows and Mac PCs. "Hearthstone" is a free-to-play game that makes $20 million monthly, Joost van Dreunen, analyst at market research firm SuperData Research, told GamesBeat. Venture Beat reports the game leads the digital card game market which is worth $1.2 billion.
