Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date: More Devices to Include New Software

No official release date has been set for the launch of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich; however, the software is scheduled to debut on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus expected to drop before the end of November.

Other companies revealed their upcoming devices, including smartphones and tablets, that will run on the next generation Android operating system.

First on deck are the upcoming Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition tablets that will use Ice Cream Sandwich when they are released.

However, Verizon may be releasing these devices under a different name, calling them the Droid Xyboard 10.1 and Droid Xyboard 8.2.

Verizon trademarked the names last month.

Other devices rumored to run Ice Cream Sandwich in the future are Sony’s Xperia devices.

This includes the Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia active and Xperia ray.

“We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich,” said Sony. “We are working on merging our current Xperia experience with the new features in Android 4.0.”

Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich at its “Mobile Unpacked” event last month.

The software debuted alongside the Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone, the flagship device for the new operating system.

No official release data have been set in the United States for the Galaxy Nexus.

The smartphone is expected to launch as a Verizon exclusive sometime before the end of November.

Ice Cream Sandwich includes some innovative features, such as a facial recognition system that unlocks the smartphone when it scans the owners face.

It also features the new Roboto graphics interface making fonts appear crispier and more legible.
