'Injustice 2' release date, latest news: Closed beta ends on Feb. 21

Game developer NetherRealm Studios recently announced the end date for the ongoing closed beta for the upcoming fighting game "Injustice 2."

According to a post in the "Injustice 2" section of the official Warner Bros. Games forums, the closed beta for the video game is set to conclude on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The statement reads: "Thanks to all of our players who took part in the Injustice 2 online beta. We received a great deal of data that will help make the launch of our online modes the best they can be. Now it is time to get busy implementing the changes. That means unfortunately we will be turning off the beta on Tuesday February 21st. Get your games in this weekend! See you May 16Th"

It can be recalled that NetherRealm has been holding a closed beta for a limited number of gamers since the testing phase began on Jan. 25. As reported by Attack of the Fanboy, gaining access to the game's closed beta was nearly impossible for many, even with game director Ed Boon giving away several access codes on Twitter.

The closed beta for "Injustice 2" was supposed to last for a month, but the recent confirmation of the beta's shutdown indicates that the development team got all the information they needed in order to improve the game, according to iTech Post.

While the news of unplugging the closed beta of "Injustice 2" may upset some gaming fans, NetherRealm brought back the excitement for the upcoming video game with the announcement that they will have another character reveal scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 23.

So far, confirmed playable characters for "Injustice 2" include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, The Flash, Aquaman, Catwoman, Robin, Blue Beetle, Harley Quinn, Gorilla Grodd, Cheetah, Poison Ivy, Black Canary and Atrocitus.

"Injustice 2" is scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16.
