iPhone 5 Release Date: Siri Compatible With iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch

It is possible to use the iPhone 4S’s Siri voice navigation system on not only an iPhone 4, but on an iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch as well, according to a report from 9to5Mac.

Shortly after the new iPhone launched, the site reported on developer Steven Troughton-Smith successfully porting the system to the iPhone 4.

“On the iPhone 4S launch date just a couple of weeks ago, we broke the news that developer Steven Troughton Smith had successfully ported the Siri user-interface and some of the underlying code from the iPhone 4S onto the iPhone 4,” wrote the site regarding the report.

Troughton-Smith made the port fully functional except he was not able to make it talk to Apple’s servers.

The developer has now corrected that error and can use the system on the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch in a fully functional manner.

“Yes, it seems to be 100 percent functional. I’m working on the rough edges, but everything that works on the iPhone 4S seems to work here,” said Troughton-Smith to 9to5Mac regarding the port.

But Troughton-Smith has no intentions of selling this port even though it works efficiently.

“I have no doubts that others will package this up and distribute it quasi-illegal, or try and sell it to people,” he said. “I am interested in the technology and making it work; proving that it works and works well on the iPhone 4 and other devices.”

One of his main accomplishments with the port was to actually get it to work on the iPod Touch.

“We got chpwn’s iPod Touch up and running with Siri after proving it works on my iPhone 4,” he said. “Unfortunately the microphone on the iPod is nowhere near as good as the iPhone.”

Troughton-Smith filmed himself using the system on the other devices that can be viewed here.
