Kristin Chenoweth in 'GCB' Premieres Tonight
Singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth will appear as Carlene Cockburn in Sunday's premiere of "GCB" (Good Christian Belles).
The Tony Award-winning actress will portray the Bible-wielding yet edgy character Cockburn in the new series on ABC alongside Leslie Bibb and Jennifer Aspen, among others.
"It's about five women who grew up together in the Bible Belt and how they deal with each other and their demons," said Chenoweth while speaking with "Chelsea Lately" host Chelsea Handler earlier this year.
"I love it because is shows faith in a very human way," added the 43-year-old actress.
"GCB" was based on the book "Good Christian B------" by Kim Gatlin, but created and written by Robert Harling.
Chenoweth has described herself as a "nonjudgmental, liberal Christian" and while the new dramatic series' title emulates a curse word, the actress defends "GCB."
"I think people should give it a chance," Chenoweth told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the show's premiere Sunday. "You just can't judge a book by its cover."
The actress largely credits her religion for her successful career, and she vehemently denied that "GCB" mocks Christians in any way.
"I remember growing up, it was always the same woman who got the solos in the church choir. And there's always the woman at the bake sale or the church dinner who wanted to outlook everyone," explained Chenoweth to THR. "The thing is, just because you're Christian doesn't mean you're perfect."
She continued, "We are all human. And so this show shows the humanity of it, and I love it. I'm one of them. I grew up in that world… it could take place in a temple, in a community, but we just set ours in a church."
"GCB" will start Sunday on ABC at 10 p.m. EST.
