Microsoft Band 2: Release Date Rumors

Microsoft is rumored to be close to unveiling its second generation fitness wearable, the Microsoft Band 2, just two weeks after images of the bracelet leaked online.

Less than a year after releasing its first Band to the public, Microsoft is reportedly preparing to debut its upcoming Band 2 next week, a fitness wearable touted to bring a more comfortable fit compared to its predecessor, which was widely criticized for being "uncomfortable" and "awkward" to wear.

A leaked image emerged a week prior showing the new fitness bracelet with its updated design and improved specs, appearing as if it may have borrowed some elements of its physical makeup from the Samsung Gear Fit.

Codenamed "Envoy," the Microsoft Band 2 may have kept its predecessor's rectangle-shaped touchscreen display and the two buttons at the bottom edge of the device. However, it appears to sport a more curved form with some metal accents, as well as an improved clasp that appears vastly different from the original's tight closure.

According to rumors, the Band 2 may come with a variety of sensors, including a heart rate monitor, a GPS, an Accelerometer/Gyrometer, Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensor to measure blood sugar levels, a microphone, a UV sensor, and an Ambient Light sensor.

The "Envoy" is also said to be equipped with an altimeter detector which can sense whether the user is going up an elevated surface, such as a staircase or a mountain.

The new fitness wearable is also reported to be equipped with Windows IoT build, enabling it to communicate with other devices carrying the new Windows 10, as well as other devices on Android and iOS.

With US E-tailer Best Buy already offering deep discounts on the original Microsoft Band, reducing it to $150 from the original price of $200, it is rumored the new Band 2 will be retailing at $200 when it first becomes available in the market.

Microsoft is reportedly in the final stages of prepping its new fitness wearable for its official debut, together with its two new Windows 10 Lumia flagships, and its upcoming Surface Pro 4 for its New York City big hardware event on October 6.
