Pearl Mackie is 'Doctor Who' Peter Capaldi's newest companion

Fans of the long-running sci-fi TV series "Doctor Who" has known for a while that Peter Capaldi's doctor will get a new companion. Now BBC One has finally named Pearl Mackie as the latest addition to the cast and will appear on the show's brand new season.

BBC officially introduced Mackie during half time of the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, April 23. The network also released a short scene featuring Capaldi and Mackie, who faces her first Dalek. The video can be found below.

Mackie's stint in "Doctor Who" is her first major television role, although she has previously appeared in TV show "Doctors." She played Anne-Marie Frasier in the show's series 15 episode 195 titled "Love is Blind." She has also appeared in film, specifically in 2013's "Svengali" as the FOH girl.

She is a graduate of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has a number of theater roles under her belt. She's currently performing in "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" for the National Theatre.

Mackie is both excited and proud to be part of "Doctor Who." She will be replacing Jenna Coleman's Clara.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family," she said. "It's such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn't be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!"

She also can't wait to bring her character, Bill, to life on the small screen.

"Reading the script … I thought Bill was wicked," she said of her character. "Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in - I can't wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series."

Her co-star, Dr. Who actor Capaldi, thinks she's a "fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm" who will be a "refreshing addition" to the popular show.

"Dr. Who's" new series will start airing in 2017. Meanwhile, fans can catch the show's Christmas Special later this year.
