Rod Blagojevich Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison (VIDEO)

Embattled former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison stemming from corruption charges for trying to sell former U.S. Senator Barack Obama’s vacant seat.

Blagojevich made a last attempt to avoid jail time by admitting he had done wrong and that he was sorry for his actions citing that he had made “terrible mistakes.” However, it was just too little too late.

Defense lawyers had made a startling admission in court on Tuesday stating that Blagojevich was indeed guilty. However, they felt that the potential 20 year sentence was too harsh.

“I acknowledge it and I of course am unbelievably sorry for it," he said. Prosecutors were asking for a stiffer sentence of 15 to 20 years.

Judge James Zagel during his sentencing said that he appreciated that he had felt remorseful for what he had done but that it did not change the actions he had committed.

"Whatever good things you did for people as governor, and you did some, I am more concerned with the occasions when you wanted to use your powers when you wanted to do things that were only good for yourself," according to AP.

Blagojevich is scheduled to report to the Bureau of Prisons on Feb. 16.
