Samsung Galaxy Nexus Release Date: Smartphone Comes With Facial Recognition Feature

Samsung's latest smartphone model, the "Galaxy Nexus," comes with a new revolutionary facial recognition feature.

This new feature, "Face Unlock," will allow the smartphone's users to unlock it by placing their face in front of the camera. Instead of utilizing passcodes and other security measures, users can simply use their face as a means of getting into their Galaxy Nexus.

However, Google's introduction video for the smartphone classifies Face Unlock as "low security, experimental."

Samsung and Google's latest smartphone was unveiled at the "Samsung Mobile Unpacked: Google Episode" media event on Oct. 19 in Hong Kong, China.

Android's latest OS Android 4.0, "Ice Cream Sandwich" was also unveiled at the event.

Weeks of speculation culminated when the respective leaders of Samsung and Google revealed the most exciting new specs of both the smartphone and operating system.

"Take a moment to imagine a collaboration, where Samsung and Google join forces to form a creation that capitalizes on the strengths of both companies," said Samsung PR Director Kim Titus at "Samsung Mobile Unpacked."

"We're going to get insight into why these two came together to create 'a truly inspirational product'."

The Galaxy Nexus' basic specs match up with previously leaked details including a 1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor, a 4.65" 1280X720 HD Super AMOLED display, 1GB (RAM) and 16GB/ 32GB Internal memory, LTE and HSPA＋ networks, Bluetooth connectivity, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and NFC as well as Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

The Galaxy Nexus also features a 5 MP camera with LED Flash, zero shutter lag, fast shot2shot and 1080p Full HD video recording, updated mobile services such as Gmail, Youtube and Calendar and specific NFC features such as an accelerometer, a compass, gyro, light, proximity and a barometer.

The U.S. carrier for the smartphone is Verizon Wireless.

Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich comes with a variety of new specs including a new custom typeface called Robato, a completely touch screen UI and Android Beam, an NFC technology that allows users to share information by touching their phones together.

The Ice Cream Sandwich powered Galaxy Nexus will release in November on Japan's NTT DoCoMo network.

It is currently unknown whether Ice Cream Sandwich will be available as a free download, however developers are able to download SDK in order to begin developing apps for the new OS.
