San Francisco 49ers Roster News, Rumors: Garrett Celek on the Verge of Signing Extension
The San Francisco 49ers decided to give tight end Garrett Celek the opportunity to play for new head coach Chip Kelly with reports that he will be signing a long-term contract that will extend his stay with the team even after the expiration of his original deal in March.
After playing eight games (most of this career) last season for the 49ers, he managed to put up numbers that could have been the reason why the team offered him a long-term extension. He set a new career high in receptions with 19, yards with 186, and TDs (three). And with Vernon Davis gone from the team, the five-year veteran will now have a bigger responsibility to hold, particularly on the offensive end.
The 27-year-old entered the league back in 2012 when the 49ers signed him to a contract after getting undrafted. But last season wasn't that great for him though after getting a high-ankle sprain that officially ended his year. Interestingly, Celek was also placed on the injured reserve the season prior to that.
The former Michigan State star played the majority of his pro football career with the 49ers, where he continues to make an impact on the team's offensive options. But while there are no definite or exact figures revealed by both parties involved in the deal, it is expected that Celek will be making more money. The only problem is that the team is still dealing with how to accommodate players in the roster who may choose to become unrestricted free agents after the season's done.
The only sure thing at this point is the fact that the 49ers are certainly going to give him what he deserves — a long-term deal that will keep him contented and satisfied to stay in San Francisco; and while doing that, the 49ers also need a great quarterback if they want to make a push this year.
