'The Magicians' Season 2 News, Spoilers: Upcoming Season Will Tackle Julia's Trauma, Betrayal

The sophomore season of Syfy's "The Magicians" will deal with Julia's (Stella Maeve) trauma from her season 1 rape, executive producer Sera Gamble has said.

Monday night's shocking season 1 finale saw the long-awaited reunion of Quentin (Jason Ralph) and Julia to stop The Beast in Fillory, but ended disastrously, with people bleeding out on the floor.

The finale concluded with Penny's (Arjun Gupta) hands sawed off, Alice's (Olivia Taylor Dudley) life hanging in the balance, Quentin much weaker, and Julia having to strike a deal with the god who raped her earlier in the season.

The dark and twisty finale sets up the fantasy series' second season, in which Quentin will have to deal with Julia's betrayal and Julia will have to deal with the trauma of her violent attack by the trickster god.

In an interview with Bustle, "The Magicians" showrunner Gamble spoke about Julia's experience and said that viewers will soon see how the character navigates her way through the many issues faced by real rape survivors.

"It should never happen, but it does happen and it's something I believe we should talk about and we should face," she said. "There's so much fear, shame, and silence around it." According to Gamble, while the topic is something that many people stay quiet about or are afraid to talk about, it is a "brutal reality" that often occurs in our world.

Gamble also spoke about the fall-out from Julia's betrayal, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "It's a huge deal."

"Did she make the perfect choice?" Gamble asked. "Were there other ways she could have gone? Of course. And that will play out extensively in season two."

According to the "Magicians" boss, Julia's big moment at the end of the season 1 finale was borne out of the big change she has gone through since the beginning of the season. By the time the character reunited with Quentin in episode 12, both had gained some "hard won maturity."

"All along they've had this festering issue between them, and they outgrew it," Gamble told Entertainment Weekly. "I think that's something that happens when you're in your early twenties."

"The Magicians" begins filming its second season this summer. Season 2 debuts in 2017.
