'Total War: Warhammer' Getting Free DLC as Well, Details Revealed

Only a month and a half to go before the release of the video game "Total War: Warhammer" and its developer Creative Assembly has shared with fans what post-launch content the game will be receiving. Aside from paid DLC packs, the real-time, turn-based strategy game will also be getting free DLC which includes a new "playable race," new Legendary Lords, magic items, quest chains and units, according to a Eurogamer report.

The brand new playable race, according to IGN, will be coming towards the latter part of the year, as the developer stated in its blog post.

In terms of paid content, these will be available as well and they will be classified into Lord Packs, Race Packs and Campaign Packs. Lord Packs will contain two playable legendary lords and their corresponding quest chains. Campaign bonuses and other items are also included. These will be theme-based on "a specific rivalry of conflict from Warhammer lore," the IGN report cited. In addition, there will be two new lords, a new unique unit, and a new elite unit of renown.

Race Packs on the other hand either add a new race or "add full unit rosters, heroes, lords and playable legendary lords to non-playable existing races." Usually, it includes a new playable race, along with "units, heroes, items, buildings, and technology and skill trees."

Campaign Packs are bigger than the Lord and Race Packs, as these contain a brand new race and a new Challenge Campaign to the game. These will also be based on "events from Warhammer lore" and are considered to be beefed up versions of the standard Race Pack.

According to another report in Hardcore Gamer, this type of post-launch content is similar to what the developer has been providing for their earlier "Total War" games such as "Rome II" and "Attila." Rob Bartholomew, Brand Director at Creative Assembly said, "The Warhammer Fantasy Battles World is gigantic, and we're looking forward to exploring it over the forthcoming trilogy. But that incredible cast of characters and monsters also provides us the chance to make lots of interesting Free DLC to support our games over time."

"Total War: Warhammer" will be released on May 24 for PC, Mac OS X and Linux.
