Trey Griffey Chooses Football Over Baseball, Commits to University of Arizona

Trey Griffey, son of baseball legend, Ken Griffey Jr., has chosen to pursue football over baseball and has committed to playing for Arizona University.

The Griffey name has been gaining steam lately, but not for baseball as some would expect. Instead the name Griffey will be synonymous for football, at least for the next 4-5 years. Trey Griffey chose Arizona University from a list of Iowa State, Michigan State and Washington State, who were also recruiting him, according to Fox Sports.

Trey Griffey played baseball, like his dad and grandfather, until he was eleven years old. His dad wanted him to choose the sport he loves and he chose football, a game which he has flourished in.

Griffey is a 6'2", 185 pound wide receiver, and he dominated at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Fl. He set records for receptions in a season with 74 and receiving yards in a season with 970 in his senior year. Scout.com gave him a two-star rating, with five stars being the highest. He was also the 96th ranked wide receiver in the nation, according to ESPN.

He told the Orlando Sentinel that he felt great about his visit to the Tuscon campus last weekend.

"It was basically just the atmosphere and I loved everything about it," Griffey said. "It was just a great, enjoyable trip to Tucson."

Following his record-breaking season, college coaches began heavily recruiting Trey Griffey. His stock continued to rise as they monitored his practices for the Under-Armour All-American Game.

Even former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson noticed Griffey's dominance. Johnson got an up-close look at Griffey while coaching for the Under-Armour game and gave him his stamp of approval, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Griffey transferred to Dr. Phillips from Winter Garden West Orange High School, where he once caught 22 passes for an amazing 362 yards and three touchdowns in one game.

Ken Griffey Jr. says his son, Trey Griffey, is the best athlete in the family, which a bold statement for family that has shown athletic prowess for generations. His father, Ken Griffey Sr., also enjoyed a legendary baseball career and his daughter, Taryn Griffey is an All-American point guard for Dr. Phillips.
