Talarico, other Democrats say they oppose trans athletes in girls’ sports: list

2. Iowa gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand

In Iowa, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand leads Republican Zach Lahn by 6 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics average.

When Politico asked Sand during an interview at the Iowa State Fair last month, “Where do you differ from your party?” he responded, “I have said consistently, I think that fairness rules the day in girls’ sports.”

When asked a follow-up question seeking to clarify his position, Sand stressed: “I just think girls’ sports are for girls' and boys’ sports are for boys. And I think that that’s fair and reasonable.”

Sand expressed a similar view on the issue during a radio interview a year earlier. When asked, “Do you think biological boys or men should be able to play women’s sports,” Sand replied, “No.”

Because Sand has expressed this position previously, it is not clear that his current stance represents a reversal of an earlier position.
