Talarico, other Democrats say they oppose trans athletes in girls’ sports: list

3. Nevada gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford

In the purple state of Nevada, Democrat Aaron Ford leads incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo by 0.5 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics average. Earlier this year, Ford told reporters that he “doesn’t personally support transgender athletes playing in sports that don’t match their sex assigned at birth.”

In 2023, Ford, who currently serves as Nevada’s attorney general, was one of nearly 20 Democratic attorneys general who signed onto an amicus brief before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in support of two trans-identified Arizona athletes seeking to participate on girls’ sports teams. The athletes, who were aged 11 and 15 at the time the lawsuit was filed, were challenging Arizona’s ban on trans-identified males competing in women’s sports.

The brief alleged that Arizona’s law banning trans-identified men from women’s sports violated the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution as well as Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the law requiring schools to provide equal opportunities for girls in sports. The Ninth Circuit ultimately sided with the trans-identified athletes in the case.
