In so doing, they defied a decree issued by the late Pope Shenouda III prohibiting members of the Coptic Church from visiting Jerusalem. The Coptic pope, who died March 17, threatened excommunication for anyone who defied the travel ban that was imposed in the late 1970s in an effort to show solidarity with Palestinians.

    Christian visitors flocked to Jerusalem Sunday to celebrate Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. Pilgrims joined a procession of about 15,000 Christians that began at the Mount of Olives. They waved palm and olive branches as a reminder of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem the Sunday before his crucifixion.
