The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected President Donald Trump's attempt to limit birthright citizenship, ruling last week that children of illegal immigrants born in the United States are citizens.

In Trump v. Barbara, the high court ruled that Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship violated the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“If Congress intended to limit American citizenship to the children of those domiciled in the United States, nothing in the succinct language of the Citizenship Clause conveyed that design,” wrote Chief Justice John Roberts for the majority.

“Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land.’ … We keep that promise today.”

While more than 30 countries have birthright citizenship policies that effectively mirror that of the United States, most nations in the world do not grant citizenship on that standard.

Here are the 10 most populous countries without birthright citizenship, based on population figures from the World Population Review. (Click to read CP's article listing the top 10 most populous countries that do allow birthright citizenship).
