10 most populous nations that don’t have birthright citizenship: list

5. Bangladesh

The People's Republic of Bangladesh, with a population of approximately 177 million, does not officially recognize birthright citizenship.

Rather, according to the Citizenship Act of 1951, “every person shall be deemed to be a citizen of Bangladesh” if “any of whose parents or grandparents was born in the territory now included in Bangladesh and who after the fourteenth day of August, 1947, has not been permanently resident in any country outside Bangladesh.”

The act also gave citizenship to “a person naturalized as a British subject in Bangladesh; and who, if before the date of the commencement of this Act he has acquired the citizenship of any foreign State, has before that date renounced the same by depositing a declaration in writing to that effect with an authority appointed or empowered to receive it.”

Bangladesh was part of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan from 1947 until 1971, when it declared independence. Pakistan, by contrast, does allow birthright citizenship.
