10 most populous nations that don’t have birthright citizenship: list

7. Ethiopia

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, a prominent East African country with a population of nearly 139 million, does not have birthright citizenship.

According to Cosmos Legal, “Ethiopian citizenship by birth is granted to individuals born to at least one Ethiopian parent, regardless of the place of birth.”

“Ethiopia recognizes citizenship primarily through jus sanguinis, meaning nationality is acquired through Ethiopian parentage,” the group stated. “Ethiopian law provides structured procedures for citizenship by birth, descent, marriage, and naturalization, administered by federal authorities.”

“Individuals born outside Ethiopia to Ethiopian citizen parents may acquire citizenship by descent. The birth must be registered with Ethiopian civil or diplomatic authorities to confirm nationality status.”
