3 highlights from Tuesday's primary elections
2. Trump’s endorsed candidates win most races, but not the Georgia gubernatorial runoff
Trump’s preferred candidates in U.S. Senate races in both Alabama and Georgia won Republican primary runoffs, while his pick for the Oklahoma U.S. Senate race won the Republican nomination outright without needing a runoff.
The U.S. Senate races in Alabama and Oklahoma are expected to favor Republicans, as Trump won both states overwhelmingly in 2024. However, Georgia is a different story, as Trump carried the state by just over 2 percentage points. The RealClearPolitics average of polls sampling voter intentions in the Georgia election shows Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., beating Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., by 2.8 percentage points.
In the Oklahoma gubernatorial election, Trump’s endorsed candidate Mike Mazzei advanced to a runoff. Unofficial results show Republican Attorney General Gentner Drummond taking 26.3% in the Republican gubernatorial primary, while Mazzei is close behind at 26%. The winner of the Aug. 25 Republican primary runoff will face Democrat Cyndi Munson in the general election. Munson won her party’s primary outright with about 75% of the vote.
In the Republican primary runoff for the Georgia gubernatorial election, Trump’s preferred candidate, Burt Jones, lost to Rick Jackson. Unofficial results show Jackson taking 52.6% to Jones’ 47.4%.
Trump congratulated Jackson on his victory in a series of Truth Social posts, one of which identified him as the “next governor of Georgia,” while the other praised his “great TRUMP campaign” and acknowledged that the GOP nominee attempted to get Trump to switch his endorsement from Jones to Jackson.
