AI regulations, sheriffs required to cooperate with ICE: 4 new Texas laws that took effect this month
1. HB 149 — Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulations
Under House Bill 149, Texas will implement a statewide regulatory framework governing the development and deployment of AI systems, with a focus on restricting harmful or discriminatory uses.
Also known as the “Texas Responsible Artificial Intelligence Governance Act" (TRAIGA), HB 149 officially restricts harmful AI uses, with a primary focus on intentional misuse. The law also requires transparency regarding AI use by government agencies and establishes enforcement mechanisms led by the Texas Attorney General’s office.
Drawing on broader frameworks, like the European Union’s AI Act, supporters say TRAIGA takes a more limited, pro-business approach while working to mitigate potential discriminatory risks.
