3. SB 2420 — Block children’s access to app stores

Passed by state lawmakers in May, Senate Bill 2420 requires app stores to verify a user’s age and confirm parental consent for anyone under 18 before allowing downloads or in-app purchases.

While SB 2420 was set to take effect this month, a federal district judge temporarily blocked the law in December on the grounds that it violated the First Amendment.

In response to the ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an appeal on behalf of the state.
