2. SB 8 — Sheriffs in counties with jails are required to cooperate with ICE
The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 8 in June 2025, which requires all Texas sheriffs who oversee jails in their counties to contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to support ICE deportations and other operations in the state.
Under the partnership between ICE and sheriffs known as the 287(g) program, ICE provides training and other support to participating county jails to help expedite the turnover of criminal illegal aliens for deportation.
Effective Jan. 1, sheriffs in counties with more than 100,000 residents must apply to join the 287(g) program.
