4 things to know about the Rhode Island shooting, trans-identified gunman Robert Dorgan
3. Governor cites ‘gun violence,’ omits mention of mental illness, gender identity
During a media statement on Monday, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, a Democrat, cited “gun violence” as he sought to console victims of the shooting and launch a support hub for those in attendance at the arena when the shooting occurred.
“Too many Rhode Islanders know what it feels like to lose a loved one, a neighbor, or a friend to gun violence,” said McKee. “And a tragedy like this is incredibly difficult for people of any age to process.”
The governor — who in 2021 signed a pair of LBGT bills into law — did not mention Dorgan’s history of mental illness or gender-related issues. On Wednesday, Rhode Island flags at all state buildings and facilities were lowered to half-staff in honor of the Lynch Arena shooting victims.
"Hearts are heavy across Rhode Island as we grieve this tragedy,” said McKee. “We continue to hold the victims and their families in our hearts. Now is the time for Rhode Islanders to stand united and show compassion for one another. Now is a time for togetherness.”
