Brian Stelter, who was fired himself from CNN last August, called the Fox announcement an "earth-shaking moment in cable news."

He suggested that the departure was not amicable.

Stelter tweeted: "Let's make one thing very clear: Tucker Carlson did not choose to leave Fox News like this. Others can decide whether the word 'fired' applies here, but he isn't leaving on his own terms."

"The biggest 'tell' in Fox's press release about Tucker Carlson's exit is that he is not getting a final show," Stelter added. "No chance to say goodbye on his own terms or point people to his next home. Fox says 'Carlson's last program was Friday, April 21st.'"
