In 2009, President Barack Obama added a bust of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to the décor of the Oval Office, with the item remaining there during President Donald Trump's first term.

However, during Trump’s second term, the bust was moved from the Oval Office to a private dining room, an unnamed White House official told USA Today last June.

The bust was cast in 1970 by African American artist Charles Alston and first appeared in the Oval Office in 2000 during President Bill Clinton's second term.

It was one of several decorative changes made to the Oval Office, including the return of a bust of former U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill that Obama had removed.

The room also saw the addition of gold ornaments around the door frames, golden figurines on the fireplace mantel, and a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence with blue curtains, according to USA Today.

Bernice King, daughter of the famed civil rights figure, posted on Instagram that she thought it was "telling," adding that she believed Trump was trying "to reframe the history of race and culture in America."
