Earlier this year, the National Park Service released its list of free entrance days at national parks. The list included such dates as Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day weekend, Constitution Day, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday, Veterans Day and Flag Day/Donald Trump’s birthday.

Many were quick to note that the list omitted Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, even though both had previously been on the list.

Kristen Brengel, a spokesperson for the National Parks Conservation Association, told The Guardian that while presidential administrations have tweaked the free days before, removing MLK Day was very concerning, as it has become a popular day for volunteer projects at public parks.

“Not only does it recognize an American hero, it’s also a day when people go into parks to clean them up,” said Brengel, noting that this will make such efforts more costly for people.

“Martin Luther King Jr. deserves a day of recognition … For some reason, Black history has repeatedly been targeted by this administration, and it shouldn’t be.”
