LGBT activists, Sophie Cunningham supporters clash outside WNBA game: 5 things to know

1. Women’s sports advocates, trans activists assemble at Target Center

About 100 people protested outside the Target Center in Minneapolis during Sunday's game, The Minnesota Star Tribune reported.

According to the outlet, the crowd was split equally between trans activists and women’s sports advocates who support Cunningham’s view that female athletes should not have to compete against men who identify as the opposite sex.

The events on Sunday mark the third Indiana Fever game to draw a rally following Cunningham’s defense of women and girls’ sports, The Associated Press reported.

Cunningham defended her views by telling ESPN, “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’”

“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,” the WNBA player added. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
