LGBT activists, Sophie Cunningham supporters clash outside WNBA game: 5 things to know
Supporters and opponents of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham clashed around and inside the Target Center following the WNBA player’s public defense of women’s sports and opposition to men competing against female athletes.
The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Indiana Fever 108-100 during a game heavily surrounded by protests and demonstrations. Women’s sports advocates gathered outside the Target Center in Minneapolis before the game between the Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx.
LGBT activists showed up during the rally before the game, hurling insults at the advocates and using bullhorns to disrupt the event. When the basketball game began, opponents and supporters of Cunningham expressed their views with signs and shirts.
Cunningham has received praise from women’s sports advocates and criticism from LGBT activists after the WNBA player declared that she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room” and that young girls “shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
