New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner has defended his wife from criticism drawn from his own extramarital liaisons.

In July of 2012, Huma Weiner delivered a heart-wrenching interview in which she stated that her husband was a "changed man." A year prior to that, her husband was forced to resign from his seven-year career as a politician due to a "sexting scandal" that involved six other women.

"I'm proud to be married to him," she told People magazine in a July interview. "My husband did a really stupid thing. It was an extremely painful time. But there was love and a commitment to this marriage. It took a lot of work to get where we are today, but I want people to know we're a normal family."

At the time, Huma did not know that her husband had intertwined himself into yet another "sexting" scandal. Going into Monday's primary elections, Weiner said in a "Today" interview that he felt confident about securing the mayoral election. He credited his wife for helping to make that a possibility, admitting that she had paid a heavy price for his indiscretions and that she was not to blame.

"I don't think she did anything wrong," Weiner told Savannah Guthrie. "Her crime is standing at my side and helping me get through it."

While Huma may have believed in her husband's ability to become a changed man after welcoming a new baby into the world, it appears that her support a year later is dwindling. Weiner could not say whether or not his wife would be by his side on Election Day, although he noted that it was a detail that should not matter to the "middle class."

"I don't know, I mean, you know I'm walking a fine line," he told Guthrie when asked if Huma would be campaigning with him Sunday. "You have, as the reporter, you have an appetite for the Huma side of the story. I want to talk about issues that are important to the middle class and the issues that citizens care about."
