'Assassin's Creed' VR arriving this year

Video game publisher Ubisoft announced on Tuesday that its "Assassin's Creed" will be translated into a virtual reality experience. The new "Assassin's Creed" VR is set to arrive later this year.

Ubisoft announced the "Assassin's Creed" VR experience during AMD's 2016 GDC Press Conference. The publisher also shared the news on Twitter but kept the details to a minimum.

"Just announced: Assassin's Creed VR experience - based on the film - is coming this year from FOX & Practical Magic," Ubisoft shared with its followers on the social media on March 15.

During the announcement at the GDC, Matthew Lewis, who is president of Practical Magic VR and director of VR experiences, made sure to emphasize that the experience is "not a game," although it will be based on the movie that was based on the game.

There will be no new "Assassin's Creed" game launching this year. However, the "Assassin's Creed" movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2016. The film is directed by Justin Kurzel and stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla, and Michael K. Williams.

Lewis also shared that the "Assassin's Creed" VR experience was filmed alongside the movie. It will feature Malta, Spain, and the United Kingdom. No other details are known about the upcoming "Assassin's Creed"-themed VR experience, although Ubisoft spokesperson Michael Beadle said fans should look forward to more information in the future. New announcement should come from the publisher, 20th Century Fox, or visual effects company Practical Magic.

The "Assassin's Creed" movie revolves around the story of Callum Lynch (Fassbender), a descendant of a mysterious secret society known as the Assassins. Thanks to some new technology, he will be able to experience the adventures of his ancestor from 15th Century Spain and in so doing, receives enough knowledge and skills to face the Templar in the present time.

Months before the movie's release and the grape vine is claiming a sequel is already in the works. Fassbender will reportedly return to star in the sequel.
