4 highlights from the Biden tapes: Classified information disclosed, name mix-ups

The Oversight Project, a government watchdog group, released 117 pages of transcripts and hours of audio Monday of former President Joe Biden's 2016 and 2017 interviews with ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer for his memoir Promise Me, Dad. The former president's attorneys had battled in court to suppress the recordings until dropping their lawsuit last week. The material is riddled with redactions, blacking out passages where Biden appears to disclose classified information.
In a statement Monday, The Oversight Project asserted that transcripts and audio recordings contain multiple redactions because Biden disclosed classified information and the exchanges show evidence of his cognitive decline.
The release of the transcripts and audio recordings comes after The Oversight Project, along with the Heritage Foundation, requested the relevant documents following the publication of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report in February 2024. The report concluded that Biden should not face prosecution for mishandling classified information because of the determination that he was a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
“Two and [a] half years ago, the Oversight Project began a lonely project trying to get access to Biden’s ghostwriter tapes where he disclosed classified information to writer Marc [sic] Zwonitzer,” said Oversight Project Vice President of Litigation Jeff Clark. “To date, Biden has paid zero consequences for betrayal of the country.”
Clark added: “The release of the tapes today, after the Oversight Project won pitched battles with the Biden DOJ and then against Joe Biden’s white-shoe lawyers in D.C., should cause a thorough reexamination of the non-prosecution recommendation of Special Counsel Robert Hur in February 2024. On the tapes, (in audio gaps/transcript redactions) Biden clearly gives away secret after secret to someone not authorized to hold such secrets.”
Here are four highlights from the newly released tapes.
