3. Biden mixes up Republican congressman and Democrat senator

During one of his conversations with Zwonitzer, which reportedly took place on Nov. 3, 2016, as his second term as vice president was wrapping up, Biden detailed how he “talked with Congressman Tim Murphy of Connecticut,” noting that he had a bill that would “focus on mental health.”

Biden clarified that the lawmaker he was thinking of was a congressman from Connecticut, answering in the affirmative when Zwonitzer asked if Murphy was from “near Newtown,” the site of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting.

The lawmaker Biden meant to refer to was Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. As highlighted in the Congressional Biographical Directory, Murphy was a congressman who represented Connecticut in the House of Representatives during then-President Barack Obama’s first term. He was elected to the Senate in 2012 and continues to represent the Nutmeg State in the Senate to this day.

Rep. Tim Murphy was actually a Republican lawmaker who represented Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District. Rep. Murphy was forced to resign in 2017 after the publication of a report revealing that the publicly pro-life lawmaker asked his mistress to have an abortion when he thought she was pregnant.
