Black Friday 2011: Danger of Death In Sales Day Chaos - How to Stay Safe From Violence (VIDEO)

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. With deals that lure shoppers from all over the country into stores on the day after Thanksgiving, the day is known for long lines, mayhem, overcrowding, and even violent episodes.

With so many people rushing to get their hands on the season’s most desired products, Black Friday has witnessed a number of violent incidents throughout the years.

The most notable Black Friday violence happened in 2008 when a 34-year-old employee at Walmart was stampeded to death as anxious shoppers stormed the store upon its opening.

The death was the first ever reported death of an employee on Black Friday.

Last year several incidences occurred on the infamous discount day.

One woman was arrested in Wisconsin for threatening to shoot shoppers in line at a local Toys “R” Us after she cut ahead of the line. A Target employee was trampled upon in an incident reminiscent of the 2008 death at Walmart. Furthermore, a man was discovered at a Florida Walmart armed with a handgun and two knives.

This year with economic stagnation and many retailers pulling out all the stops to attract people into their stores on Black Friday, shopping on America’s most popular discount day could be dangerous.

Shopping experts warn consumers to be prepared for long lines and a shopping rush, but also offer suggestions for keeping families safe during the notoriously chaotic shopping day.

Some of the tips for people planning on shopping on Black Friday this year include sticking close to family members, keeping a working means of contact close by – such as a cell phone, and having an emergency plan ready in case of catastrophe.

Other suggestions include staying on high-alert, keeping aware of your surroundings, and removing yourself and family members from “mob-like” situations.

Experts even suggest that online shopping might be the safer option this year.

Many retail giants will be offering great discount deals online, which will enable people who are claustrophobic or get nervous in crowds to take part in discounts without leaving the comfort and safety of their own homes.
