Church bells in Madrid, Spain resounded for five minutes this morning at 7:37am, marking the first year since terrorist bombs killed 191 passengers aboard a commuter train in the capital's Atocha station.

650 churches in the Madrid area took part in the bell ringing event.

"It will be a very sad day, especially for the relatives of the victims," said Amaya Sistiaga, a 35-year old office worker to the Associated Press, as she stood outside the Church of Saint Terasa this morning.

People also brought flowers and candles to a makeshift memorial at a park that was inaugurated today. Some 190 cypress trees have been planted at the "Forest of the Missing" park in memory of the victims.

The king of Spain and various dignitaries from around the world also attended the inaguration and observed five minutes of silence at noon for the victims.
